The Coal Creek Miners Museum is honored to be the recipient of the Be More Award awarded by the East Tennessee PBS, which is given to individuals and organization that provide important services and support to their community.

Coal mining became an important Tennessee industry after the Civil War. Five large mines operated in the Jellico area coal field in Campbell, Anderson and Scott counties. Other mines were located in Claiborne, Morgan, Hamilton and Marion counties. Read about a mine tragedy in Anderson County.

Tennessee Lands Unsuitable for Mining Petition. Under SMCRA, a member of the public may petition a state regulatory authority to declare areas not otherwise precluded from coal mining operations as "lands unsuitable for mining" (LUM).Such a designation would mean that no new surface coal mining permits could be issued within the designated area.

The Tennessee Valley Authority and a number of private coal companies own the rights to coal deposits below these lands. Because a "lands unsuitable" designation only applies to surface mining, they could still conduct underground mining and surface mining outside of the ridge tops of the designated area.
